As the formerly tiny town began to boom, demand for lumber increased dramatically, and the ships were dismantled and sold as construction material. Within months, San Francisco’s port was teeming with boats that had been abandoned after their passengers-and crew-headed inland to hunt for gold. The Gold Rush conjures up images of thousands of “’49ers” heading west in wagons to strike it rich in California, but many of the first prospectors actually arrived by ship-and few of them had a return ticket. Early sections of San Francisco were built out of ships abandoned by prospectors. The percentage of women in gold mining communities did eventually increase somewhat, but even in 1860 they numbered fewer than 10,000-just 19 percent. Some women’s journals back east, fearful of the trouble the men might get into without the civilizing influence of women, published stories and ran ads encouraging educated, morally minded young women to travel west to tame these men. The few women who did travel to the west eked out a living in the growing boomtowns, working in the restaurants, saloons and hotels that seemingly popped up every day. In 1852, 92 percent of the people prospecting for gold were men. Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to California to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush, but almost none of them were women. The Gold Rush was a male-dominated event. Most died from disease or mining-related accidents, but more than 4,000 were murdered by enraged miners. Within 20 years, more than 100,000 would be dead. Before the Gold Rush, the state's native population numbered roughly 300,000. However no ethnic group suffered more than California’s Native Americans. The Gold Rush proved dangerous and deadly for non-white people.ĭuring the Gold Rush, violence against foreign miners increased, with beatings, rapes and even murders becoming commonplace. That bill was eventually repealed, but was replaced with another in 1852 that expressly singled out Chinese miners, charging them $2 ($80 today) a month. In 1850 California’s legislature passed a Foreign Miner’s tax, which levied a monthly fee of $20 on non-citizens, the equivalent of more than $500 in today’s money. As the amount of available gold began to dwindle, miners increasingly fought one another for profits and anti-immigrant tensions soared. By 1852, more than 25,000 immigrants from China alone had arrived in America. As news of the discovery was slow to reach the east coast, many of the first immigrants to arrive were from South America and Asia. In fact, by 1850 more than 25 percent of California’s population had been born outside the United States. The Gold Rush attracted immigrants from around the world. government had purchased the land, California became the 31st state in the Union. All of these people (and all of this money) helped fast track California to statehood. By the mid 1850s there were more than 300,000 new arrivals-and one in every 90 people in the United States was living in California. Just 20 months later, following the massive influx of settlers, the non-native population had soared to more than 100,000. In March 1848, there were roughly 157,000 people in the California territory 150,000 Native Americans, 6,500 of Spanish or Mexican descent known as Californios and fewer than 800 non-native Americans. The Gold Rush was the largest mass migration in U.S. Mint were produced using North Carolina gold. Eventually, more than 30,000 people in the Tar Heel state were mining for gold, and for more than 30 years all gold coins issued by the U.S. Fifty years before gold was discovered at Sutter’s mill, the first gold rush in American history got underway after a 17-pound gold nugget was found in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. That honor actually belongs to North Carolina. California did not have the first gold rush in American history.

SO CHECK EVERY TICKET TO BE SURE BEFORE YOU DISCARD. PRIZES OVER $200.00 AND NON- WINNING TICKETS WILL HAVE THE SAME VALIDATION CODE 2 TRIANGLES EITHER DIRECTION. a woman had 2 normal triangles but actually won $50,000.00 so take care in checking all tickets. so what you may perceive as a loser may just be a BIG winner. I have searched all over the internet on the OLG sites and could not find the instant scratch codes so i took it upon myself to compile the codes and confirm them with a retailer *Check your tickets twice as prizes over $200.00 AND non-winning tickets have the SAME Triangle validation codes. I hope this post might educate a few out there and then they can pass on the word. The ticket states on the back that you must play the complete game. I have also seen people scratching tickets in stores, seeing triangles, and then the retailer just says, I'll throw them out for you. I have seen the retailer go out and fish through the garbage on numerous occasions and grab some of these tickets. I see it everyday as I work near a convenience store. If there are triangles, they just toss them. The reason is that many people out there just scratch the tickets until they see the codes. It is also a little known fact that a vast amount of these big prizes are either never claimed or claimed by lotto retailers. It is a fact that the big prizes do have triangles and I am pretty sure they are inverted. I wanted to comment as well on the triangles. Myself and others have always been curious about those codes. I just came across ths site and this thread and had to reply. To record this, I went back to the Invoice and clicked on Refund/Credit, which created a Credit Memo. A few days later, they said they had meant to only pay $500 now and $1,500 later and asked to have $1,500 refunded, so I processed the refund. His quotes have wormed their way into our brains because they are as identifiable as they are hilarious. Who hasn’t let out an angry “D’oh!” when they’ve stubbed their toe, or muttered “mmmmm… donuts” when biting into a delicious donut? It’s no wonder that Homer has become one of the most enduring and popular television characters of all time. He is the American everyman, with his dead-end job at the nuclear power plant, his house in the suburbs, his over-worked wife and 2.5 kids. Homer is ignorant, impulsive, quick to anger, and an alcoholic, but he is also loyal, he loves his kids, and he always makes the right choice by the end of the episode. So lets crack open a Duff beer and count down 25 of his funniest quotes from the 31 season run of “The Simpsons.”Ĭreated by Matt Groening as a hasty drawing in the lobby of producer James L Brooks‘ office, “The Simpsons” first originated as short animated bumpers for “The Tracey Ullman Show.” Homer is voiced by former “Tracey Ullman Show” cast member Dan Castellaneta, who has won four Primetime Emmy Awards for his voice-over work. Homer Simpson has been making us laugh from his very first “D’oh!” to his latest “Woo-hoo!” For more than three decades and counting, the ne’er do well patriarch of everyone’s favorite animated sitcom clan has had us rolling in the aisles with his outrageous howlers. Step 4: Write out the factors and check using the distributive property. The last equation doesn’t appear to have the variable squared, but when we simplify the expression on the left we will get n2 + n. Listed below are some examples of quadratic equations: x2 + 5x + 6 0 3y2 + 4y 10 64u2 81 0 n(n + 1) 42. For example, in the form of x 2 + bx + c requires two brackets (x + d) (x + e). Step 3: Find the factors whose sum is – 7: Quadratic equations are equations in which the variable is squared. Factorising, or factoring quadratic equations is the opposite of expanding brackets and is used to solve quadratic equations. We need to get the negative factors of 10 to get a negative sum. Step 2: Find the factors of ( x 2 – 7 x + 10) If there are many factors to consider you may want to use the quadratic formula instead.Įxample 1: Get the values of x for the equation 2 x 2 – 14 x + 20 = 0 For example, 2x 2 is a quadratic expression as the power of x is 2. So be sure to start with the quadratic equation in standard form, ax2 + bx + c 0. And, as you get into higher level math, there are applications. You cant know that the 2nd solution will be a complex number at this point in solving the equation. By dividing by 'p', you destroy / lose the 2nd solution. Factoring completely with a common factor. The quadratic equation must be factored, with zero isolated on one side. Sometimes they are the same solution and the equation degrades to a single solution. Factoring quadratics as (x+a) (x+b) Factoring quadratics: leading coefficient 1. When the coefficient of x 2 is greater than 1 and we cannot simplify the quadratic equation by finding common factors, we would need to consider the factors of the coefficient of x 2 and the factors of c in order to get the numbers whose sum is b. A quadratic expression close quadratic expression An expression where the maximum power of any variable is 2. The Zero Product Property works very nicely to solve quadratic equations. Start from a general quadratic equation x 2 + b x + c, where b and c are real numbers. Sometimes the coefficient of x in quadratic equations may not be 1, but the expression can be simplified by first finding common factors. The reverse FOIL method takes the quadratic form of the equation and turns it into a product of two binomials. They are used in countless ways in the fields of engineering, architecture, finance, biological science, and, of course. For example, equations such as (2x2 +3x10) and (x24 0) are quadratic equations. An equation containing a second-degree polynomial is called a quadratic equation. Each is with respect to a horizontal axis through the centroid of the given shape. If the piece is thin, however, the mass moment of inertia equals the area density times the area moment of inertia. It also determines the maximum and minimum values of section modulus and radius of gyration about x-axis and y-axis. The second moment of area, also known as area moment of inertia, is a geometrical property. This calculator uses standard formulae and parallel axes theorem to calculate the values of moment of inertia about x-axis and y-axis of angle section. That is:Ī \ y_, the centroids of the two areas at either sides of the neutral axis can be found and the evaluation of the plastic modulus becomes straightforward. The area moment of inertia or second moment of area has a unit of dimension length 4, and should not be confused with the mass moment of inertia. The following is a list of second moments of area of some shapes. To find its distance, y_c, from a convenient axis of reference, say the lower edge of the cross-section, the first moments of area, of the web and the two flanges, relative to the same edge are employed (note: the first moment of area is defined as the area times the distance of the area centroid from the axis of reference). The exact location of the centroid should be therefore calculated. We will explain how these formulas work so that you wont have to wonder how to calculate the moment of inertia of a rectangle ever again. The bending moment M applied to a cross-section is related with its moment of inertia with the following equation: where E is the Youngs modulus, a property of the material, and. SECOND MOMENT OF AREA (AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA) CALCULATOR. However, the same cannot be said for the other axis (x-x) since no symmetry exists around it, due to the unequal flanges. The moment of inertia (second moment or area) is used in beam theory to describe the rigidity of a beam against flexure. The clear height of the web, h_w that appears in above formulas, is the clear distance between the two flanges:ĭue to symmetry, around the y axis, the centroid of the cross-section must lie on the y axis too. The area A and the perimeter P of a double-tee, with unequal flanges, can be found by the next two formulas: Moment of inertia equations is extremely useful for fast and accurate calculations. |
